Deon Grant Bio

Deon Grant attended Josey High in Augusta, Georgia, where he played Defensive Back and Wide Receiver for the school’s football team and various positions on the basketball team. He was a first-team USA Today All-American and rated the best defensive back in the country and the ninth ranked defender overall by The Sporting News. In 1996, his senior season, Deon posted 99 tackles, six interceptions, five forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries playing both quarterback and free safety. He caught 28 passes for 622 yards with eight touch downs in his final year. At Josey High, Deon was a member of the Academic Decathlon Team and the National Honor Society.

Deon attended The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where he pursued a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering prior to being drafted his Junior year into the National Football League. Deon was a first-team All American selection by The Sporting News, Football News, Walter Camp and the American Football Coaches Association and a second-team pick by The Associated Press. He was an All-SEC first team choice, AP SEC defensive Player of the Year. In 1999, during his Junior year at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Deon was a finalist for the Jim Thorpe Award, an award given annually to the nation’s top Defensive Back.

Deon was drafted by the Carolina Panthers in 2000. March 11, 2004 he signed as an unrestricted free agent with the Jacksonville Jaguars, taking over the starting job at Free Safety. Deon played for the Jacksonville Jaguars for three seasons. In 2007, Deon signed with the Seattle Seahawks as an unrestricted free agent where he became the highest paid defensive back in NFL history. April 2010, Deon signed with the New York Giants where he continues to perform as a veteran Free Safety offering leadership on and off the field to his peers.

In addition to being competitive on the football field, Deon enjoys the game of basketball and the opportunities provided through educational initiatives. Deon believes in creating options, which is why there is no surprise that he was also considered for the possibility of joining the basketball team with The University of Tennessee, Knoxville which would have led to serving on two Division 1 collegiate teams (football and basketball) throughout his college career. Not to mention, being a recipient of various college recruitment offers for both basketball and football. Deon is a durable, dedicated and incredible player proven by having the longest consecutive starting streak at the safety position amongst active players, fifth consecutive overall active players across various positions. He is proud to have played at the highest level of competition for his athletic career (NCAA National Championship 1998 and Super Bowl XXXVIII).
